Ugly Flannel
Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States
About
Having formed before each member turned 20, fans of Ugly Flannel have truly gotten to watch them grow together and foster a community in their hometown over the past 6 years. Determined to leave no one behind, dueling singers, Ben (guitar) and Kate (bass) spout angsty but relatable, coming-of-age lyrics to crowds of all types around the Midwest. Hard-hitting timekeeper, Athen provides the backdrop to their nostalgic alternative and emo sound that falls somewhere between Toadies and The Promise Ring. Ben’s songs are lackadaisical and snotty enough for the band to have seamlessly fit bills with others like hardcore punks, Scowl while Kate’s melodies are bright and uplifting enough for them to logistically share a stage with fellow Grand Rapidian ska legends, Mustard Plug. If it’s one thing that Ugly Flannel likes to emphasize both on record and in live settings, it’s being punk but with an endless range in both sound and mood. Perhaps nothing more about the band’s intent is better exemplified than their 2022 album, “Goodbye American Dream,” courtesy of Young Heavy Souls. On it, they chose to partner with numerous pals made along their journey so far. Features and collaborators on Goodbye American Dream include Sam Cook-Parrot, Sean Bonnette, and Vagabonds to really drive the communal celebration home.
