About
While drummer Andrew Black (The Explosion) and frontman John Henry came up together in the D.C. hardcore/punk scene, Henry and bassist Chad Fjerstad became acquainted in 2006 when their melodeath bands (Darkest Hour & Dead To Fall) accompanied each other on both U.S. and European tours. Eventually, the three members, each on their own individual paths, reconnected in Los Angeles. Henry brought a fresh sound to the table and quickly had his songs complemented by the pummeling percussive expertise of Black. In 2015, they added Fjerstad to the lineup and self-released a self-titled demo LP. As a trio, they shifted towards a slightly heavier sound while maintaining the pop sensibility of the early material. In 2017, they garnered the attention of the legendary John Reis (who would produce), and in turn, Southern Lord Records. On September 7th, 2018, their proper debut, "All Love Is True Love" was released. "Don’t think this is a shallow tribute to a music scene of yesteryear; All Love Is True Love is serving to provide an exuberant passion for a style of music that truly married the off-kilter and alternative dirge with deviant pop hooks. This album is infectious and insistent, and there’s something about its modesty and lack of ego that makes it even more appealing" -Steve Tovey, Ghost Cult 2019 saw The Primals embark on their first full tour, a headlining stint across Europe. And before the year's end, a west coast rendezvous with Helms Alee and the legendary Cave In.
