<a href="spotify:artist:7ksMJElEOPusYvTw4fc8Zv" data-name="Second Half">Second Half</a> is an alt-rock band from Iowa City, weaving together the emo-tinged pop-punk of <a href="spotify:artist:1HxXNvsraqrsgfmju1yKk8" data-name="Modern Baseball">Modern Baseball</a>, the raw vulnerability of <a href="spotify:artist:2ApaG60P4r0yhBoDCGD8YG" data-name="Elliott Smith">Elliott Smith</a>, and the slacker charm of <a href="spotify:artist:3inCNiUr4R6XQ3W43s9Aqi" data-name="Pavement">Pavement</a>. Known for their dynamic songwriting and emotionally resonant lyrics, they craft songs that feel both lived-in and expansive. Their debut EP is due out summer 2025. <a href="spotify:album:37jJLIo6LeLruI046j5yCZ" data-name="Sad, Good, Loving & Boredom">Sad, Good, Loving & Boredom</a> is their newest single. Recorded with Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Studios, the track doesn’t so much begin as it unfurls, slowly, like a letter you’ve read a hundred times but still aren’t ready to throw away. Meticulously arranged, yet always teetering on the edge of collapse, it begins in a contemplative slow-core headspace, before shifting—dramatically—into a full-band breakdown. From there, the song combusts into a ragged, pop-punk sprint, careening toward catharsis. Anchored by literary lyrics, lo-fi textures, and a soaring chorus, the song captures the ambivalence of young adulthood: the moments that ache, shimmer, and fade too fast. It’s a handmade, heartfelt track that begs to be played loud.
