About

Toronto based band School the Band was partially founded in 2017, where lead singer and songwriter Emma Zwick and drummer Julia Band Orange met at Girls Rock Camp Toronto where they were put in a band together. Unfortunately, around 2020, other members of the band parted ways but Emma and Julia stayed together and continued creating music. It wasn’t until guitarist Zoë Finkelshtein, one of Emma’s longtime friends, joined that they gained further momentum and reinvented themselves as School the Band. Towards the end of the pandemic, they began playing live shows, notably beginning in Julia’s garage. Fast forward to the spring of 2022, where the trio wanted to record a music video of their song Alien Girl, which was shot by Emma’s friend Ellery Akira. After meeting the band, it was decided he would join as a bassist, an instrument he would learn just for School the Band. The now full band has upped their game and complexity of their songs and recorded their first studio album Dioxide, named after the first song all four members developed together. The band’s Indie Rock sound is heavily influenced by bands like Hole, Modest Mouse, Beach Bunny and other independent artists like Alex G and Snail Mail. All influences shine through their album, all the while keeping their unique skills and musicality their own. School is now entering their new era of music, inspired by the interests and sound of each member. Come back next School-year for more!
