Saint Ives is the altpop project by Rotterdam-based duo Ella Kuijpers (vocals) and Remy van Leeuwen (production). The music is inspired by the 90’s triphop of Massive Attack, Björk and Zero 7, as well as the modern alternative pop of Grimes and Robyn. Shimmering, the debut single, was created during the lockdown days in Ella and Remy’s house studio in Rotterdam. The production is built upon a typical triphop rhythm, inspired by the song ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ by Massive Attack. The instrumentation consists of building (digital) strings, substantiated by undertones of analog synthesisers. Ella's voice floats over the production while alternating between long notes and sharp, rap-like verses. With this type of combination between production and vocal parts, the emphasis is placed on creating an atmospheric experience for the listener. The artwork consists of a picture taken by Ella at the Tate St. Ives in the English seaside town Saint Ives, the place which also gave the project its name. Saint Ives is a very unique artist’s village which Remy visited with his parents many times during his childhood. The picture was taken inside the museum, an looks outside through a tinted window. This creates a scenic image, where only the contours of the building across the street are somewhat visible.
