About
Discover is a beautiful and tender collection of ballads, across which Domschke weaves poignant, dreamlike observations on trepidation, self-doubt, and uncertainty throughout one’s search for love — and the unforeseen complications that arise once one has finally found it. Stylistically, the EP’s five songs bounce around somewhere near the intersection of indie-folk and dream pop, calling to mind the anthemic optimism of mid-2000s indie archetypes — like Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, and Tegan and Sara — without being merely derivative of any one of them. The music ranges in dynamics — at times swirling into lush, atmospheric climaxes that wax transcendent and edge on sublime post-rock, before suddenly dropping out again, leaving only the idyllic twang of a banjo and soft strumming of an acoustic guitar. But if Riley Parker’s stylistic sensibilities occasionally err on the ‘rootsier’ side of indie rock — their music presented so earnestly and untainted by modern irony that it hearkens to a more ‘organic’ and hopeful era in indie-rock music — the EP’s production and the songs’ arrangements are so sleek and tasteful, by modern standards, that it never feels like a nostalgic rehash of some past moment, or some past music. Riley Parker is not interested in dwelling on yesterday, but planning for tomorrow — moving forward in the face of judgment and scrutiny, and the need, within any relationship, to feel accepted.
