About
Queen Rat is a rock trio born in Ohio, growing up in Philly. Drawing from rock heroes ranging from Hole to The Raincoats to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as contemporary influences like Cherry Glazerr, Palehound, and All Dogs, the band pairs pensive, observant lyricism with a versatile grunge-rock style. In 2019 — performing under the original name Rat Queen — the trio released their debut EP “Clear Ghost Party Host” and supported acts including Dehd, Soccer Mommy, and Sneaks. Hanif Abdurraqib called them “Some Cool Youths.” After the 2020 pandemic geographically separated the band, Queen Rat began writing an album while 2,698 miles apart. Spurred by interest from producer Chance Milestone and funded by a Kickstarter campaign, the band made plans to bring their album to life. In April 2021, after a year apart, the five days spent recording their debut album at Headroom Studios was the first time the band had played these new songs together. In early 2022, Queen Rat signed a publishing contract with Merge Music Publishing, relocated to Philadelphia, and formally adopted their new name. Their debut album “Until It’s Not” was self-released on May 6th, 2022. The entirety of “Until It’s Not” — writing, recording, producing, mixing, mastering, photography, and design — was intentionally completed without contribution from cisgender men. The result is a collaborative, far-ranging record about friendship, nostalgia, Ohio, and awe.
