About

Pape is an experimental post-punk band formed in 2018 by five members of other Spanish bands (Antigua y Barbuda, Wilhelm, Kyoto, Trocotombix and Kokoshca) with a repertoire of a hundred gigs and occasional European tours'. After editing two EPs, "Dimeleloqué" (2018) and "Quelapasa" (2019), with the latter being published by an underground label called Mama Vynila Records (Barcelona), the band released the "La Playa" single in 2021, and finished recording their first LP, leaning towards a more dramatic, post-punk sound and feel. Even though some of its members are from cities such as Zaragoza and Valencia, Pape are originally from Pamplona. They rehearse and record at MOTUmusica, a well known place led by Guillermo Mutiloa (the drummer of the band). The new album, recorded between April and July 2021 at MOTUmusica, is a dive into a much deeper and more intense sound compared to the band’s earlier recordings. The eight tracks which form this album are much longer, in turn leaving behind the signature sense of urgency and rushed speed that accompanies punk. Instead this piece of work heads towards a more developed universe, slowing down tempos and simplifying structures. Inspired by the works of Alan Vega, Girl Band, Daughters, Swans or Rafael singing in the style of Nick Cave, the integration of synthetic sounds, a noise-driven atmosphere and the prominence of vocals has driven Pape into a space of continuous exploration of such sonic landscapes.
