About
Known for weaving dreamy vintage sounds into thoughtful, carefully crafted songs, Oddeline is a musical project based in Ottawa, Ontario. Heavily influenced by 1960s jazz-folk like Nick Drake and Fairport Convention, with a DIY attitude rooted in a love of post punk and early indie bands, Oddeline started out playing live shows in Ottawa at 18 years old, and released her self-produced debut EP Fated to Drown three years later. Since then, she's been busy carving a unique path as an artist: from recording and performing original music, to co-organizing community initiatives like Tunnelfest (a renegade folk festival held in pedestrian tunnels), to producing for other artists (such as Mars Aspen’s 2023 folk-pop single overgrown). Her newest single Mercury Ascendant wears its influences from the darker side of classic folk music on its sleeve. Taking inspiration from Francoise Hardy, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen, the song features pared down percussion, lush strings, and fingerpicked guitar. Passing as a sweet, simple love song, the lyrics poke fun at the long tradition of the “silent muse” – a figure celebrated by artists as a source of inspiration, depicted as sort of a mirror to the artist with nothing of their own to contribute. Hear Oddeline and her band at Ottawa Bluesfest this summer on Friday, July 12th, 2024 at 8:30pm on the River Stage.
