About

On Max’s latest album ‘Flowers’, you can hear him stretch the limits of his own pre-determinations in a way that feels historical and futuristic all the same—timeless and lived-in yet existing someplace beyond the folk bonafides that have long encapsulated Kahn’s off-kilter lilt. The songs get personal without losing his trademark brightness. He’ll always try to be funny about the things that are following him around, be it death, marriage, and whatever triumphs and tragedies fall someplace in-between. Kahn moved to New Orleans about 14 years ago. A San Francisco native, he was a songwriter then but in Louisiana he became a performer—busking on Royal St with jazz and country bands, playing upright bass and guitar until it became a full-time gig. Now, much of his time is spent playing tenor banjo in the traditional jazz band Tuba Skinny. Since his 2016 debut LP, ‘Max & the Martians’, he was contributor to Mashed Potato Records Vol. 1 and 2. His 2nd LP 'All the Same' came out in 2021, and 'When I Cross It Off', which he co-produced with Duff Thompson came out in 2023.
