About

"Maroota Joe was a racing greyhound that my neighbour owned, way back before we were born.” Scruffy, singer/guitarist explains. At the age of eighteen, the self-taught guitarist cut his teeth busking on the streets of Sydney to make ends meet after suddenly losing his high school sweetheart, his job and his car licence all at once. A year later, he formed Maroota Joe with keyboard player Adam Fawcett and drummer Max Finn, the group began gigging as a trio playing edgy, intense blues rock. Bass player Jye Hogarth joined later on after the boys discovered him passed out on the bathroom floor at one of their shows. With the addition of a fourth member, the group were able to evolve naturally into a heavier incarnation with a new found ability to explore the depths of progressive rock and raw emotion, while still staying true to their roots. Their roots lie in a remote bushland in North West Sydney called Maroota. A shed converted to a jam room/living space is where Maroota Joe meticulously form their music in a process that consists of extended late-night jams, writing and refining their compositions. Through their dedication and commitment to these sessions they’ve brought into the world an array of heavy prog-rock masterpieces laden with chaotic heavy riffs, odd time signatures and profound vocals and lyrics. Lyrics that capture a time of searching and the unapologetic depiction of an individual’s pain, struggles, triumphs, strengths and, most importantly, anger.
