About

Hailing from the rebel city of Cork, Ireland, Maicín balances chaos and calm—a collision of cutting cynicism and wide-eyed sincerity. Jagged guitars meet delicate keys, with raw basslines, shimmering synths, and lap steel all woven into a style they call “pastoral post-punk”. Think of the love child of Billy Bragg and Jarvis Cocker… now get your head out of the gutter and picture Maicín. They’ve been steadily writing and recording with acclaimed producer Oli Deakin (CMAT, Elanor Moss, Swimming Bell), shaping a sound that’s sharp-edged and melodic. Maicín’s live shows are visceral yet tender, evoking the chaotic charm of golden-era CBGBs while delivering sharp emotional resonance. In 2025, they won both the UCC and Intervarsity Battle of the Bands, marking them as one of Ireland’s most compelling new acts. Matt Hurley (vocals), Aidan Kelleher (drums), Darragh McNamara (bass), Meabh Fitzgerald (keys), and Ryan Daly (lead guitar) formed Maicín out of a shared need for expression. What began as a creative outlet for two architects in London evolved into something bigger—driven, honest, and unexpectedly heartfelt. Hurley’s songwriting is inspired by the beauty and absurdity of everyday life—irreverent, romantic, yet grounded. This is the closest thing to meaning they’ve found. So they take it seriously… sometimes.
