We’ve been expecting you… A knock on a large, menacing door that slams shut upon entry. A dark rumble through a flickering, candlelit hallway. The psychedelic tremble of the thick air in a forgotten chapel. Welcome to the Mad Abbey. Since 2017, Mad Abbey has crashed through the lines of progressive rock and roll to present sounds that include, but are not limited to, explosive head-banging, sinister psychedelia, and righteous upbeat movements. Amidst the dense Richmond, Virginia music scene, 2020’s ambitious full-length studio album Haze of Your Own broadened the band’s horizons. An expanse in recognition led to a chain reaction aiding in the genre-defying, ever-evolving obscurity that is Mad Abbey. Mad Abbey’s debut “Demo EP” revealed a promising introduction through the use of wavy, melancholic beats that somehow manage to offer an optimistic commentary on life’s many restraints. From “Haze of Your Own,” the cathartic yet foot stomping “My Sight is Clearer” will have you planted in a mesmerizing shock wave of experimental rock. Mad Abbey’s future is anything but bleak, and as the band begins to shift towards the impenetrable world of hard rock, they manage to retain their psychedelic core. Coming in 2023, Mad Abbey’s highly anticipated sophomore album moves along with production as the band experiments with harder rock influences and ominous sounds of the American wild west. The future may further demonstrate that once you enter the Abbey, you can never escape.
