About

At the forefront of the Sydney pop-punk scene, Wollongong-based five-piece Lightyears are fast emerging as a band to watch. Described by Triple J as the lovechild of Violent Soho and Jimmy Eat World, the band combines memorable vocal hooks with gritty guitar melodies and a nostalgia for the early 2000s music scene. Lightyears are unapologetically honest in their love for mid-2000s pop-punk, drawing heavily on the music that shaped their formative years; bands such as Neck Deep, Knuckle Puck, and everyone’s favourite trio, blink-82. Vocalist and lyricist Jack McCann pulls no punches with his songwriting, exploring the anguish of modern-day romance and heartbreak with a touch of self-deprecation and sarcasm. Lightyears’ emotive vocals are balanced out by hard-hitting guitar riffs as guitarists Noah Maranesi and Sean Brien seamlessly blend American Midwest emo with early wave pop-punk and a touch of hardcore. Anchored by drummer Caeden Devane, whose energetic (and shirtless) live performances evoke Travis Barker, and bassist Matt Weisel, who adds a refined layer of playing and songwriting to the mix. After gathering the attention of Triple J with their debut EP ‘Bloom!’, Lightyears are looking to carve out their own place in the Australian pop-punk scene with their two new singles: ‘Wilted Flowers’ and ‘Chasing Ghosts’.
