Kess, the rambunctious musical alter ego of Aaron Kessinger, is prepped to blow your collective minds with his debut album, Birthday Party. A native of Wichita, Kansas, Kess grew up on a midwestern diet of biscuits and gravy and classic rock 'n roll, and cut his teeth early on in high school musical productions and a slew of choir classes. Since trading the rolling plains for LA’s seedy underbelly, Kess has cultivated a folk-pop sensibility. His speakeasy timbre, quippy lyricism, and comedic embellishment seeks to honor his yearbook superlative of “Most Likely to Star in a Broadway Musical.” Kess’s musings on time, life and pursuit of meaning may seem heavy, but they sound anything but.   Birthday Party, his freshman album, is an assemblage of bedroom recordings cobbled together while roaming the southern west coast over the course of several years; discovered somewhere between late night jam sessions with friends and the bottom of many a Coors Light tallboy. From the psych-rock, cool-water trappings featured on songs like “Pink Flamingo” to the earnest storytelling of “Song for Ryan” and “TV Screen,” Birthday Party is equal parts reflective, celebratory ,and camp, like a supermarket sheet cake and an overfilled piñata.
