About
Beyond The Gloom Releasing October 5th 2023 Beyond the Gloom is the debut solo album by Toronto based singer songwriter John Baker. The record is a seed bank of memories, conjuring visions of cigarettes sparking on the roadside, plunging into cold dark pools and the invisible cells that connect us all together. Strumming his guitar in white jeans, a fringed jacket and cowboy boots the songs ring out echoing 60s rock and 90s alt-country. A new addition to the dog walking genre, one hears the influence of Paul McCartney’s “Ram”, Belle and Sebastian, Wilco and Neil Young. Being recorded on Reel to Reel tape, the songs are touched by the warmth of nostalgia — his soft singing voice, like that of an old still life painting blends with the glowing atmosphere from the warbling organ and dancing pedal steel. The backing band is an assemblage of some of the finest musicians one could ever hope to find. Hailing from Toronto and Nashville: Aaron Goldstein on Pedal Steel, Dani Nash (July Talk) on drums, Micah Hulscher (Margot Price) on organ and Mike O’Brien (Zeus) on bass and guitar.
