About
Hate Club doesn’t deal in absolutes. This might surprise you when hearing their origin story: vocalists/guitarists Noah Bondy and Audrey Goodemote struck up a conversation in an Albany coffee shop, sensed an unbreakable friendship in between sentences, and soon started combining their divergent approaches to writing music on guitar. The result, which lies in the cautious intersection between threaded melodies and urgent chords, informed the earliest Hate Club material, recorded quickly and without much of a plan. Their second EP, A Clear Mistake, shares a lot of that beginning’s improvisational briskness. After all, Hate Club began out of love for writing and playing emotional music first, dealing with emotionless industry politics later. After Ian Kerr-Mace joined as their steady drummer and Nick Koechel rounded out the roster on bass, Hate Club maintained their songwriting hallmarks, but ditched some of the spontaneity. Tightly Wound, the quartet’s debut full-length, is another testament to Goodemote and Bondy’s impressionistic lyrical style and instrumental interplay. Anchored together by loose ideas of codependency, mental anguish, and yeah, that beast of a music business, Hate Club trades in their speed and efficiency for an aching humanity. Engineered by Nick “Scoops” Dardaris (Prince Daddy & The Hyena, Coupons) and mastered by Jay Maas (Defeater, Greet Death), Tightly Wound is well-worn and focused. Welcome to Hate Club’s first proper meeting.
