Ginkgo Balboa was founded by Mike Bednarsky and Ben Masbaum in 2019. Ben is the reluctant craftsman responsible for the band's genre-bending sound, and Mike is the sultry singer and scribe who gives a face to the name. Bring together Ben, the multi-instrumentalist, with Mike, the wordsmith, and you have some cool indie shi that really bumps. In 5 short years, Ginkgo Balboa has developed a following in praise of its nuanced, contemporary sound, which is rooted in catchy synth keyboard melodies, intricate guitar trills, and the pinballing of Mike and Ben’s distinctive voices. The duo has pushed the envelope by seamlessly drawing influence from a swath of music genres but never straying too far from the pop sensibilities that give the band that de facto Millennial/Gen Z appeal. While they are focusing on their studio recordings this year, when Ginkgo Balboa does hit the stage, it’s a 5-man swing, with the talents of guitarist Kristopher Keesling and the Caprino brothers—Tony Caprino on bass and Nick Caprino on drums. The latter are also affectionately referred to as “Caprhythm”, for their sibling synchronicity of being able to hit every note masterfully in tandem. Ginkgo Balboa released its second single of 2024, “Perfume”, in June.
