About
Messy endings can make for beautiful beginnings. Living in NYC and in the midst of a transition with her indie rock trio Demander, Karen Kanan Corrêa was offered a touring gig with Swedish Grammy Award winner Moneybrother. One month on the road turned into six months, an indefinite hiatus for her band, and goodbye to her fifth floor walkup on the Lower East Side. Adrift and inspired, she found a new voice during songwriting stints in Portland and London, channeling an open heart into freshly vital songs. Equal parts chaos, darkness, and utter joy, she released this new experiment under the name Futurebrite. The first EP, Carinae, established Futurebrite as one of NYC’s “Best Emerging Electronic Bands” (Deli Magazine). After a move to Oakland, CA, she wrote and released the follow up EP, Ah La La. Before Futurebrite, Karen led the “dizzyingly addictive” (CMJ New Music Monthly) indie trio Demander, with two albums and multiple tours across the US and Europe with bands like The Hold Steady, New Model Army, and Art Brut. Karen has also toured as bassist for cult heroes World/Inferno Friendship Society. She’s sung on releases from many artists, and won composer and songwriting residencies in New York and Los Angeles. Most recently, Karen toured as bassist and backup singer for Dams of the West (Grammy Award winner Chris Tomson of Vampire Weekend) and launched a new project, Bel Aviv, that recently released an EP and opened for artists like Frightened Rabbit and Torres.
