He lovingly refers to his own signature sound as “Nine Inch Nails committing wholeheartedly to performing <a href="spotify:artist:6sFIWsNpZYqfjUpaCgueju" data-name="Carly Rae Jepsen">Carly Rae Jepsen</a> covers.” Recorded in equal parts at his home, in the historic Power Station studio in Hell’s Kitchen, and in the rafters of the first gay bar he ever visited, new single ‘Alone Together’ takes familiar pop sounds and recontextualizes them into something unrecognizable, raw, and desperate. Anchoring the chaos is FLOWERBOY’s organic, measured voice, his deadpan and subversive humor, and his penchant for writing lyrics that are at once skewering and deeply romantic. In other words, he’s in rare form here – Earmilk called the song “the anthem for a lonely heart in a crowded room,” and Plastic Magazine called it “a poignant exploration of queer longing and hidden desire, wrapped in a shimmering package of 80s-inspired synth-pop.” His debut DIY album Possessor (2021) has received over 100K streams to date, and garnered critical praise for being “singular and deliberate” in its songwriting (Phoenix New Times). The same publication called his genre-bending followup single, ‘New Personal Low,’ “an electropop banger” and a “genuine new height” for the artist.
