While every band of the post-COVID era seems hellbent on giving you the "next great Slint tribute act", the guys in Eyecandy seem remarkably bored by the idea. The 4 piece, Oxnard rock outfit bulldoze through every buzzy hallmark of the RateYourMusic Generation with true delinquent spirit: breakneck guitar acrobatics, hilariously saccharine twee-flirtations, oppressive doomsday crescendos, bursts of cheeky chamber-pop exuberance, and noisy stop-start ADHD hysterics. Their new record ‘You Can See Me From the Mountain’ naturally evokes all sorts of cute descriptors ("post-emocore", "noise-rock revival", "zoomer-prog") which all end up feeling lazy allegations at best. I'm sure every college-aged, Narcan-equipped, black T-shirt at their shows will feel as though they're witnessing the next Slint or Unwound or Rites of Spring, but the joke is really on them. Spiderland was great and all, but it’s time to say goodbye to the ground and follow Eyecandy's lead here. - M.P.
