About
Born and bred in the East Midlands, queer folk artist Emily Ashberry is a singer-songwriter-come-balladeer with an innate feeling for crafting meaningful stories through her music. After training as an actor, her final year of study and potential stage career was quickly knocked back by a global pandemic. Stuck in her childhood bedroom with no job to go to, Emily began to write folk tracks influenced by the traditional music she’d grown up with. Over time, two lockdowns, and a six-month jaunt around the US and Canada, Emily’s songwriting style developed into something more personal, contemporary, and introspective. Her debut EP ‘Roots’, released in 2023, showcased her traditional background, and received multiple plays of BBC Introducing, while her second EP ‘A Pleasure To Teach’ explored a much more modern form of folk song, described by Nottingham’s LeftLion magazine as “a superb example of what modern folk song writing can achieve.” Now her latest work ventures into the world of Americana and bluegrass-inspired sounds. With a generous grant from the Alan Surtees Trust, Emily has delved into music history spanning two continents, her debut album exploring the deep-rooted connection between English and American folk music.
