Em in the Waking

About

"Changemaker, cyclebreaker, sleeping people’s shouldershaker" - Em in the Waking makes story-driven alt folk about the inherent sacredness of being different. With evocative lyrics, emotional vocals and acoustic guitar as the foundation of their sound, Em takes inspiration from their life as a trans person, as well as their strange prophetic dreams to take you on a journey of struggle and overcoming - sprinkled with equal amounts of humour and god complex. Their music has been described as “it feels like you’re telling us bedtime stories”, “you’re like, the gay Bo Burnham” and “it’s giving pirate”. A self taught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Em started performing their original songs at small pride events in 2017. After beginning to self-produce and release music in 2021, they moved from Stockholm to London in 2022 to do a BA in Creative Musicianship at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance. They are currently working on the EP "A God in Human Drag" — an activist project that aims to empower transgender people through folklorish songs that depict the transgender experience as something sacred, beautiful and natural.
