About

El Flaco is an Austin Texas based noise/boogiestomp rock trio formed in 1992. Rob Gray (Bass/Vocals) and Brad Turner(Drums/Vocals) had played together in Bouffant Jellyfish. After bringing on Chris Hay for guitar and vocal duties, El Flaco was on, and quickly developed a following in and around Austin as part of the 90's noise rock scene. The band recorded the Thub CD at Sweatbox Studio in 1994 produced by Paul Stotinger. Touring the southwest followed; with the band wearing through several vans and trucks. The band solidified their sound characterized by what critics called "realrawk," "wits as sharp as their riffs," and "balls-out rocking on the verge of collapsing into uncontrollable hysterics." The band co-wrote via jam sessions, and fused a heavy rock groove approach with shared vocals, featuring Turner's high pitched poetry, Hay's rock melodies and falsettos matching his guitar lines, and Gray providing a mix of spastic sing/talk. Producer Mike McCarthy worked with El Flaco in 1996 and manyof these tracks were released on the 1998 "El Pee" CD. The band picked up publishing and management deals, working with the ZZ Top team. El Flaco was voted the Austin Music Award’s 1997 Best Alternative/Punk band. The band appeared at multiple SXSW conferences, the MTV music festival, and in the movie Rock Opera. By 1998, the band had amassed a solid fan base around the southwest, but members Gray and Turner decided to pursue careers in neuropsychology and the culinary arts.
