Cryptids
Perth, Western Australia, Australia
About
Cryptids are a five-piece based in Boorloo (Perth, Australia), consisting of frontman, guitarist, and songwriter Dan Morey, guitarist Joseph Bergyl, multi-instrumentalist Saskia Willinge, bassist Jake Barnett, and percussionist Andy Tuckey. They make music that is sometimes dreamy, sometimes noisy, and usually a bit of both, with an emphasis on atmospheric textures, introspective lyrics, and masc/femme harmonies. The origin of Cryptids lies in Dan’s decision in 2020 to gather friends together to work on the music he had been writing since the age of 15. The band name derives from the term for folklore creatures that are said to exist despite an absence of conclusive proof (The Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, for example). The name reflects the enigmatic quality of the band’s songs. Dan chose the name after a phase of obsessively watching The X-Files.
