Crooked Spies
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
About
You are. I am. A simple invitation that Crooked Spies looks forward to putting forth on their sophomore album ‘A Lesson in Heuristics’ set for release May 2024. This lyrical anecdote does spawn a deeper meaning for the Calgary, AB, based group who truly are the by-product of individualism seeking to achieve a collective voice. Comprised of indie punk enthusiasts in the Evanik brothers, an excommunicated bass ace with a passion for pop rock and a technical drum prodigy from the world of hardcore and metal, it’s clear that the path to a defining sound would be at least somewhat crooked for the group. Encompassing a youthful and unabashed confidence, the group has been previously described by Mike Bell (theYYSCENE) as “a gnarly, almost belligerently cool slab of stoner rock, muscled-up pop-punk and ’90s mostly metal...” "Pay it Mind" and "Chasing Light" pay homage to the forward driven rock of yesterday. Sticking to their lyrical roots of hiding in plain sight, the singles showcase the groups’ ability to convey existential and complex social issues through concise and often simple lyrics. Creating a personal dialogue of understanding the group is clearly focused on being present in their own lives and "paying it mind" in all aspects of their musical endeavours. After 10 years together and no jade in sight, the group continues to grow and live by a simple ideal.
