About
A fascination with the in-between sparked Crazy Eyes into existence. A bit over ten years ago, Seattle musician Kellen Grace had a chance encounter with a CP-70 – a piano that exists between the acoustic and the electric. Its plunky funkyness, its ability to sound simultaneously like a guitar and an antique piano, and its sheer physical presence inspired new ideas and Crazy Eyes was born. Today the band is Kellen (piano, voice), Brock Johnson (drums, occasional band cheerleader), Ryan Looman (guitar) and Casey Rosebridge (bass). A warmth radiates from Crazy Eyes: a fuzzy cohesion that has grown organically. Every week, these friends play their instruments together without judgment and see what arises. Out of these playful sessions came Suburban Disappearance, Crazy Eye’s upcoming second full-length album and follow-up to 2015’s raucous Ring Ring Jingalong and Dark Heart Singalong. Suburban Disappearance creates an uncanny landscape – one in which the most important conversation you’ve ever had takes place in a parking lot while aliens may or may not have landed in the strip of suburban forest behind your house. Atmospheric elements, from quiet wind chimes to noisy guitar sounds, give a sense of place. Kellen takes full advantage of the CP-70: jangly piano rhythms turn into chaotic textures, crashing and swirling. Like their high-energy performances, the band gets loud, but it all serves these anthemic yet intimate songs.
