Closetalker
Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States
About
“You are all exemplars of the Live Mas mentality,” Closetalker’s stage banner reads in typical tongue-in-cheek fashion. Closetalker first emerged in the spring of 2021, quickly ascending through the ranks of the South Minneapolis scene to become one of the most-loved punk bands in the Twin Cities area, playing backyard ragers, Saint Paul dive bars, benefit shows at DIY spaces, and sundry other gatherings. After doing everything from playing birthday parties to opening for local hardcore legends Man Afraid, they went on their first tour in the fall of 2022, trekking across the Midwest and South in pursuit of that “Live Mas mentality." Sonically, Closetalker draws from a variety of influences across the punk and hardcore spectrum. The presence of early emo such as Rites of Spring is particularly strong, as well as the Merge Records sound exemplified by bands like Superchunk and Archers of Loaf. Their debut album, Destination Isolation, merges these diverse influences into a cohesive whole. Bright guitars meet raw vocals, mirroring the contrast between struggle and joy in Olson’s lyrics. Bringing a punk rock sensibility to what is more rightfully an emo band, these songs celebrate friendship and the “good life” as much as they lament isolation, strife, and capital. Jovial but unafraid to let on that shit sucks sometimes, and representing a wide swath of the human experience, their very versatility is what makes Closetalker resonate with such a broad body of fans.
