About
Canterbury Bells is a burgeoning indie-folk band consisting of Sean Emmett Thompson, Ezra Teshome, and Liam McKay (Moving Van). These compulsive songwriters blend classic folk sensibility from a modern perspective to create their unique sound. The band draws inspiration from the raw beauty of nature, from the humbling experience of a redwood forest to the bliss of floating in a still lake. They are based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thompson founded Canterbury Bells in 2022 to flesh out his solo work. He contacted keyboardist Ryan Ehresman after he remixed one of Thompson’s earlier tracks, “Manzanita,” which was released as part of a compilation via “The Branching Out Project” on Bandcamp. The two also knew each other from playing shows together with other projects in the past. However, in a case of mistaken identity, Thompson had confused Ehresman for a different keyboard player. Nevertheless, a songwriting partnership was born. Ezra Teshome was soon added as lead vocalist after Thompson worked as a session musician on Teshome’s solo record. As a non-binary American of Ethiopian descent, they bring a captivating sense of perspective to lyrics and songwriting. Ehresman eventually befriended drummer Liam McKay in the City College of San Francisco choir. McKay’s combination of pocket, songwriting skill, and easygoing attitude made him an instant fit.
