16 Underground

About

16 Underground, from Southern California, knows what music — the best music — sounded like 25, 30 years ago. And they know that if you want to keep the music alive, you must make it yourself. Do you know their namesake? Then you know their sound: the break beats and tremolo pulse, the keyboard grace notes prone to leaping from one end of the stereo spectrum to the other, the girlish-but-knowing voice and the diffidently romantic lyrics, the gauzy, growly bass tone that Massive Attack perfected — it all originates back there in the increasingly mysterious past, but 16U has freed it from the archives so that it may live and breathe once more, right here, right now. - Matt LaForge
